Brodowski, Antoni (ur. 1784, zm. 1832 Warsaw).
He received a thorough general education at home and in private schools, he also learned drawing. After my father died, plenipotentiary of Tadeusz Brodowski, Mostowski took Antoni in 1805 to Paris as a teacher of his children. Staying there until 1808 Brodowski was supposed to be educated by the miniaturist Jean-Baptiste Augustin. From decline 1809 he was in Paris again, this time as a scholarship holder of the Chamber of National Education of the Duchy of Warsaw. Initially, he studied at David's studio, about from 1811 he was one of Gerard's few students.
With the end 1814 he returned to Warsaw, where, due to the lack of a suitable job, he started clerical work. The path to an artistic career was opened by his success at the first Fine Arts Exhibition in Warsaw in 1819: for a great composition Saul's Wrath Against David received a gold medal. W 1820 he became a temporary professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University, w 1824 – permanent professor and v 1829 – councilor professor.
By developing active pedagogical activity, he thoroughly transformed teaching methods: next to studies of ancient sculptures understood as a model of perfect beauty, study of a live model, he recommended following the example of nature. He had lectures on mythology.
Brodowski actively participated in the artistic life of Warsaw. He participated in exhibitions in the years 1819-28. W 1823 participated in a competition for a composition on the theme of Oedipus.
He joined the campaign of organizing competitions, taken in 1825 by Warsaw artists to combat the privileged position of foreign artists. Therefore, he performed with Blank (not realized) design of wall paintings for the main Redutowa Hall in the newly built National Theater. Has been since 1822 adoptive member of the Warsaw TPN, that have been before, w 1809, accepted him as a member “walking”. He published the dissertation “What constitutes a painting school”. During the November Uprising, he looked after Belweder on behalf of the National Government.
He created mythological and biblical compositions, usually in large sizes. From contemporary events in a non-existent image Awarding a diploma to the University of Warsaw by Tsar Alexander I.. Above all, however, he was afraid of Brodowski as a portrait painter. Scientifically, social activity brought him in contact with the intellectual elite of the Warsaw intelligentsia, to a large extent became a portraitist of the academic and literary spheres. His best works are: Self portrait, Portrait brother, Portrait of Fr.. Ksawery Bobusz (lost) and Portrait of Archbishop Szczepan Hołowczyc.
The artist's two sons, Józef and Tadeusz, were also painters.
