Cybis, Jan (ur. 1897 Wróblin, zm. 1972 Warsaw).
Painter, journalist and art critic, translator, member and founder of the Paris Committee. He studied at the Academy of Art and Art Industry in Wrocław in the l. 1920-21 and the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts under the direction of J. Pankiewicz from 1921 do 1924. In the same year he went with the Kapists to Paris, where they studied painting, initially in contact with Józef Pankiewicz and a branch of the Krakow Academy, later, completely independently.
W 1930 their first exhibition took place at the Galerie Zak in Paris. The following year, they returned to Poland and presented their works to the Polish audience. Cybis was the leading figure of the K.P., the main promoter and exponent of its artistic ideology. He has repeatedly appeared in the pages “The Voice of the Artists”, being the editor of this magazine about clear “color orientation”.
Color was the form and content of J.. Cybisa. His paintings illustrate the consistent path followed by the artist in his search for the greatest possible brightness of color, extracted from the painting matter, paint texture. Cybis cultivated all types typical of the post-impressionist movement, probably expressing himself most fully in the landscape, in which light becomes an element encompassing all the components of the picture.
A valuable addition to J. Cybis are his Painting notes containing both insightful remarks devoted to his own work, as well as statements about broadly understood matters of art and culture, of which he was an active participant and a keen observer. One of the artist's undoubted achievements is also his translation into Polish of E.Fromentin's work Old Masters.
