Fedkowicz, Jerzy (ur. 1891 Stefanówka in Podolia, zm. 1959 Cracow).
Painter, pedagogue (drawing teacher at junior high schools in Kraków, professor at the private Free School of Drawing and Painting, founded by v 1923 and led to 1935 and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow), member of the groups Jednoróg and Zwornik. He studied painting initially in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and in years 1915-21 was a student of W. Weiss at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. Lata 1921-23 spent in Paris. He then settled in Kraków, from where he left for Paris several times. He also traveled to Italy, Yugoslavia and Great Britain. From 1918 participated in exhibitions, he also collaborated with the weekly “Even”, for which he made drawings and lithographs. Initially, Fedkowicz's painting underwent various influences and transformations. Contacts with the Formists, with whom he exhibited in 1919, have left a mark in his paintings from the years 1919-21. However, the interests of color played a dominant role in the artist's mature work, which came to the fore after 1927. Color became the main substance of his paintings, relegating the role of an object to the background. Fedkowicz's landscapes and still lifes are usually kept in warm conditions, delicate, slightly muted tones, both made of almost pure colors, as well as subtle half and quarter tones. The texture of these canvases is characteristic (especially after 1934) with rough surfaces, resulting from the thickening of layers and streaks of color, the painter's favorite shades of pink, red, yellow, blue and green.
