Film and Theater in Austria

Film

Attempts to bring Austrian filmmaking onto the world stage have so far gone unnoticed. The directorial work of Fritz Lang is an exception (1890-1976), author of early cinema masterpieces, such as the silent science fiction movie Metropolis (1926 r.) and M (1931 r.) with Peter Lorre. In Austria, among others,. American directors Fred Zinnemann (From here to Eternity and High Noon) i Billy Wilder (Half a joke, half seriously). Klaus Maria Brandauer is certainly one of the most famous Austrian actors (m.in. Mephisto, 1980 r.), as well as Romy Schneider, Maximilian Schell, Hedy Lamarr, and of course the former Mr Universum, known for his muscularity, Arnold Schwarzenegger, starring in famous action movies, such as both parts of the Terminator.

Theater

They have always maintained the Viennese tradition in the theater – and they continue to do so – operas and operettas, born in the golden age of music. In addition, Greek tragedies are regularly staged, avant-garde arts, pantomime performances, comedy and farce and other genres. Vienna is home to four state theaters and operas: State Opera, folk opera, Academy Theater i Burgtheater. The latter is the leader among German-language theaters and operas. In Vienna, as in any state capital, there are also municipal theaters.
