Hulewicz Jerzy

Hulewicz Jerzy (ur. 1886 Kościanki near. September, zm. 1941 Warsaw).
Painter, chart, writer, playwright, publisher, member of the group Bunt, ZPAG, Circle of Advertising Graphic Artists. He studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków in the years 1904-06, then complementing them in Paris and Munich. He organized and managed a publishing company “Shopping”. He was one of the leading figures and theorist of Polish expressionism. He published a biweekly “Spa” (1917-20), editing it in cooperation with S.. Przybyszewski. The most outstanding works and the most characteristic views published in “Spa” in years 1917-19, published by Hulewicz in the volume The dawn of the epoch (Poznan 1920), providing him with an introduction, in which he formulated i. the essence of new art: “An inside view. Synthesis. The desire for materiality; Content Form service. Reaching the depths direct”. In later years, he took over the duties of the head of the Warsaw literary department “Courier Poranny”, he also founded a private painting school. In his own art, he implemented the anti-aesthetic assumptions of the Bunt group. He painted visionary shapes of monsters (a bit Witkacian), acts, portraits, birds; expressive woodcuts with thick contours and strong black and white contrasts. He also practiced metal techniques, he was an illustrator (J. Slovak, Genesis from the spirit, 1918; E. Zegadłowicz, Beskid powsinogi 1925, 2 wide.; Chartak. A collection of poets at the Beskid, 1925). He published many articles, philosophical and aesthetic writings as well as plays and novels. During the occupation, he collaborated with his brother Witold in publishing the secret underground press. Hulewicz's painting output and manuscripts were destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising.
