Kotsis Aleksander

Kotsis Aleksander (ur. 1836 Ludwinów near. Krakow, zm. 1877 Podgórze near. Krakow).
Aleksander Kotsis studied at the School of Fine Arts in Krakow under the supervision of W.. K. sattlera, W. Łuszczkiewicz and A.. Płonczyński and at the Academy of Vienna. After returning to Poland, he settled in Krakow, from where he traveled to Paris, Brussels, Vienna and Munich. He also traveled to Podhale and the Tatra Mountains. He painted landscapes and portraits, and most of all genre scenes from the village life. Today, Kotsis's paintings are mostly in museum collections; are a real rarity in the antiquarian market.

A careful analysis of the portrait and comparing it with the famous paintings by Alexander Kotsis allows us to consider the painting as the work of this artist, which is in line with the painters' opinion expressed on the reverse. Włodzimierz Tetmajer and Leonard Better, who recognized the model of Kotsis in the portrayed girl and, in the opinion of such experts in painting as professors Feliks Kopera and Wincenty Łempowski. However, Siemiradzki's alleged authorship should be completely ruled out.

Critical realism in painting manifested itself in describing the most extreme cases of human misery resulting from unfair social systems. There were accusing images, referring to the social reaction. The extreme poverty of Galician peasants was a frequent subject of observation by Alexander Kotsis, a leading representative of the realistic trend in Polish painting 2 mid-nineteenth century. Dark, fucking rooms, fire extinguished, empty pots, and in the midst of it all death, disease, the hopeless vegetation of human beings deprived of the most essential means.
