Lampi John the Baptist

Lamps, John the Baptist (ur. 31.12.1751 Romeno near Trento, zm. 16.02.1830 Vienna).
Lampi's first painting lessons were given to Lampi in Romeno by his father, provincial painter. In years 1768-71 the artist was educated in Salzburg, probably in the studio of P.A. Lorenzoniego, a relative of the mother. In years 1771-79 he stayed in Verona and Trento, w 1780-83 in Innsbruck and Klagenfurt, from where he moved permanently to Vienna. W 1786 he was appointed a professor of the local Academy and its counselor. He stayed in Poland, invited by King Stanisław August, about three years (1788-91) . W 1791 he was back in Vienna, from where he went to Russia, where in years 1792-97 he was the painter of Catherine II at her court in St.Petersburg. Upon his return to Vienna, he re-took the position of professor at the Academy and held it until 1822. W 1798 ennobled by the emperor, w 1799 received honorary citizenship of the city. He was an honorary member of the Academy of Verona, Vienna, Petersburg and the Swedish Academy. Lampi was a portrait painter. The first archival confirmed Polish portrait of him- Ludwika, née Kleists of Zyberkowa – arose in Vienna between 1783 i 1784. During his stay in Poland, Lampi portrayed the monarch five times and made numerous images of personalities associated with the royal court: Władysław Gurowski, Michał Jerzy Mniszch, Stanisław Małachowski, Kazimierz Sapieha, Szczęsny Potocki, Franciszek Ksawery Bxanicki, a z dam – Elżbieta Grabowska née Szydłowska, Izabela Ogińska née Lasocki, Kordula née Komorowska Potocka and many others. After leaving Poland, Lampi did not lose contact with the Polish aristocracy and painted, among others. Józefa Potocka, née Mniszech, twice (once with my daughter, copying her husband's portrait for the second time, ok. 1791), in the later period, among others. he portrayed Maria Zamoyska née Granowska, 1801 and Ludwika Kossakowska née Potocki, 1807.

Portrait of Joachim Chreptowicz
pastek, oval,
Rajnold Przezdziecki's collection 1939 (missing in 1944 r.);

Joachim Litawor Chreptowicz (1719-1812) he was the great Lithuanian chancellor, one of the initiators and founders of the National Education Commission, enlightened magnate, introducing progressive social reforms in their estates in Szczorsy and Wiszniewo. The portrait is a replica of a painting that used to be in Szczorsy. There are documents in the Szczecin Archives, linking the first version of the portrait with Grassi as the creator (Z. Wdowiszewski). A subtle and deep expression of the portrayed face in our painting, far from more superficial characteristics, that Grassi gives to his models, as well as the painting texture – in this respect, in which photography gives us the concept of it – incline to accept the authorship of John the Baptist Lampi, St..
