Teodor Axentowicz

Axentowicz, Theodore (ur. 1859 Braov in Transylvania, zm. 1938 Cracow).
Teodor Axentowicz – painter, pastellist, lithographer – he was one of the most famous and respected in his time, also abroad, Polish portrait photographers. He was educated in Kraków and Munich; from 1895 he was a professor at the Academy of Krakow. Initially, he painted in a realistic academic manner, later his art was influenced by English painting of the 18th century and the works of contemporary artists – Boldoni, Whistler or Sargent. He gained recognition with idealized images of elegant ladies in beautiful Art Nouveau dresses and graceful portraits of children.. He also painted genre paintings (scenes from the life of the Hutsuls, Huculskie types) and historical. His pastels were characterized by a light texture and the delicacy of running a multi-colored crayon, making up fluffy, a vibrating network of flexible lines. The painterly means of expression used by Axentowicz were distinguished by elegance which determined the atmosphere of the painting.
