Jan Piotr Norblin de la Gourdaine (ur. 1745 There's-Faut-Yvonne, zm. 1830 Paris).
Jan Piotr Norblin de la Gourdaine ur. 15.07.1745 r w There's-Fault-Yvone, zm. 23.02.1830 in Paris. Painting studies, which was preceded by independent drawing lessons, began in Paris with F.. Casanovy (he undoubtedly studied with him in 1769). In years 1769-70 he continued his studies at the Academy of Painting and Sculpture, and in years 1770-71 w Royal School for Protected Students. W 1771 he went to London. In his early career, he mainly painted battle scenes in the style of Casanova. He also practiced graphics, initially by making engraving copies of works by other painters, over time, undertaking independent work.
From 1772 started working for Fr.. Adam Czartoryski, which he also accompanied on his travels (several times to London). The artist came to Poland in 1774, engaged on 10 years as the court painter of the Czartoryski family and the teacher of their children. In the first period of his stay, he lived in Warsaw in the Blue Palace and in Powązki. He was not only an advisor to Fr.. Izabela while arranging flower arrangements, but he also did a lot of painting for this team: emblems for huts symbolically representing a characteristic feature of their inhabitants (preserved one), many panels decorative – in years 1774-78 Country fun in the study of the largest cottage (destroyed in 1794), ok. 1785 to the hut of the palace of Fr.. Izabela, a series of rococo paintings on canvas, depicting social activities, of which five have survived.
At the request of Fr.. Adam performed before 1783 for the Knight's School, compositions illustrating school life and a series of paintings based on themes “Metamorphosis” Ovid, modeled on the illustrations of the contemporary French edition.
It is likely, that he decorated the Blue Palace after the passages of St. 1780. While still a painter of the Czartoryski family, he started working in Arkadia for Helena Radziwiłł née Przezdziecki. Some of the houses in the park were designed there, in years 1783-85 painted the ceiling Dawn in the Temple of Diana and decorated the duchess's bedroom with frescoes depicting views of the Powązki Cemetery. He also painted views of Arkadia and Nieborów, from which two albums were made: Arcadia, composed of forty-odd boards from the years 1789-90 and Nieborow, also containing the works of the students. As it seems, Norblin also worked for King Stanisław August (he had the artist's paintings in his gallery), decorating the plafond of the Golden Room at the Warsaw Castle.
About 1787 Norblin settled in Warsaw, opened a workshop and admitted students, and also gave lessons in the homes of the aristocracy. His students were, among others. Płoński, Rustem and Orłowski, ks. Adam and Maria Czartoryscy, Krystyna and Aniela Radziwiłówny and Gabriela Dembowska. During the Warsaw period, Norblin, painting in oil, gouache, in watercolor or sepia, he mainly practiced genre themes, showing the life and customs of all layers of Polish society. He was not indifferent to current political events. He painted, among others. repeatedly passing the constitution 3 house. He devoted many paintings and drawings to the Kościuszko Uprising (m.in. Hanging traitors in front of the town hall building in the Old Town Square, The slaughter of Prague, Insurgents' fights at the Church of Ś-to Krzyski, Attack of scythes on cannons near Racławice, The Battle of Szczekociny, Kosciuszko taken prisoner). He was also in the Warden's camp: Norblin's passport, issued by the president of Warsaw, Zakrzewski, with a sketch of the Kościuszko camp near Mokotów has survived. There he made many sketches and drawings, where the legend came from, that he took an active part in the uprising.
After the fall of the uprising, he re-established contacts with the Czartoryski family. He has been in Puławy many times(longer periods after 1794 and in years 1800-1804).There, he restored the paintings of Boucher, which had been destroyed during the war “golden hall”, recreated the celebrations taking place in Puławy, and also in years 1802-1804 for Fr.. Izabela's views of Puławy and the surrounding area, like Marynki and Parchatka, from which it was created “Album of Puławy Views” twenty-few survivors). At the request of the duchess, these views were repeated on a series of plates made for her by E.-S. Dagotyi in Paris.
He was also an illustrator, m.in. in years 1777-78 performed 24 illustrations for “Myszeidy” Krasicki and “Tristama Shandy” Sternea.
Graphics occupies a significant position in Norblin's work, which he was cultivating to 1789, constantly experimenting and perfecting the technique. He often took up subjects developed in painting in his drawings. As a graphic designer he was influenced by Rembrand, whose works he repeatedly duplicated. He also drew influence from the surrounding reality. He had a habit of returning to a topic he had already worked out and processing it. He made a total of ninety etchings.
